MV Agusta Reparto Corse is taking part in the third round of the Supersport world championship at the Portimao track in Portugal. Yesterday, riders Raffaele De Rosa (1’46”148) and Federico Fuligni (1’48”019) completed the first two free practice sessions, finishing in fifth and seventeenth place respectively. This morning both returned to the Portuguese track for the third and final practice. De Rosa improved on his earlier time, albeit by only a fraction, to close eighth with a time of 1’46”101. Fuligni also lowered his time, placing seventeenth in the combined standings with a 1’47”396. The Superpole ran in the late morning in high temperatures. De Rosa (1’45”608) achieved ninth position, while Fuligni (1’46”542) finished fifteenth. As a result, they lined up on the third and fifth rows of the grid respectively for the first race of the weekend (the 2020 calendar sees two Supersport races taking place each weekend), which ran over a distance of 17 laps. De Rosa got away well when the lights went out, moving into eighth place. He then made up several positions, progressing to fifth, fourth and then third with just four laps to go. De Rosa gritted his teeth and held third to the line, securing a place on the rostrum. Fuligni, initially in fifteenth place, had moved up to thirteenth when a problem with the electrical system forced him to retire during the course of the tenth lap. Tomorrow will see the two MV Agusta Reparto Corse riders take part in the fifth race of the Supersport world championship, again at Portimao.

Raffaele De Rosa: “This morning in Superpole I made a few small mistakes on my fast lap and finished ninth. I knew I had good pace, but I wasn’t relaxed at the start, because I was thinking about Sandro Cortese’s accident in the SBK race, about which we had no news. I started quite well anyway but then struggled to make up places, also due to strong winds. I pushed hard to the line and brought home a podium which boosts morale both for me and my team. I didn’t celebrate on the podium out of respect for those suffering from coronavirus. I want to thank my technicians for their great work today.”
Federico Fuligni: “I was recovering well but unfortunately a technical problem forced me to stop. I didn’t make a bad start but then I made a mistake and lost some positions. I started to make up the lost ground, though the strong wind was creating issues. I was lapping faster than those immediately ahead of me and was catching them, but unfortunately I couldn’t finish the race due to a slight setback that my technicians have already resolved. Luckily we have another race tomorrow and so I have chance to make up for today. Thanks to my team, they’ve worked really hard for me today.”
